Buying

What should I be paying?

Based on this first drive, our recommendation would be to focus on the base-engined Limited model, which feels like the real sweet spot in the Explorer range. It can still tow 5,000lb, has decent gas mileage and enough power and willingness from the 2.3-litre engine and all the space.

The hybrid model is just too expensive and doesn’t offer any noticeable benefit right now, so we’d avoid that. It may improve in the future and we’d be open to another look. But when it costs almost $10k more than the Limited, it doesn’t make a great case of itself.

Likewise the Platinum models are by far and away the best balance of performance, appearance and features. But then they cost over $60k by the time you’ve loaded them up with all the bells and whistles. And when you get to that price, the svelte Lincoln Aviator is a far better place for your money.

You could say the same about the ST model, which shares the same twin-turbo V6 in a similar tune with the Lincoln. But there is a blue-collar charm to the fastest Explorer that will win it fans among the fast Ford fraternity for years to come. Having driven it, we absolutely understand why.
