Toyota Proace review

Of your three trim levels, you’ve got a basic one, a sensible middling one, and the top one which feels a bit too nice to ever put to work. 

All versions get the SmartCargo adjustable load bay, which is handy. Proace Active gets standard central locking, cruise control with speed limiter, air-con, a couple of airbags, electric windows and door mirrors, plus digital radio with USB connection and Bluetooth. 

Pardon? Sorry, Icon grade adds quite a lot of soundproofing to make the cabin a lot quieter. You even get an ‘acoustic windscreen’. As opposed to an electric one? Don’t tell Bob Dylan. This spec also treats you to a cooled glovebox and some more 12-volt power outlets. 

Spot a Proace with chrome side bars, body-colour, front fog lights and 17-inch alloys and it’s a range-topping Design spec. This lobs in a seven-inch touchscreen with nav, and even a head-up display. We’d stick with Icon, and save around £3,500.

We covered several hundred miles in our Proace and easily matched the claimed economy of 35-38mpg. Range was over 500 miles, thanks to the hefty 69-litre tank.
