Buying
What should I be paying?
Anywhere from £2,000 to £3,000 depending on interior quality and mechanical originality. We’d suggest sticking to this range too and avoid any temptation to overspend. The right example will show up if you look hard enough.
The other main cost will be road tax, which currently comes in at a hefty £385, so that… won’t be fun. But a Mk1 should be peanuts to insure, and that’s where expenses start to level out.
Any nice-to-haves to look out for?
Anchor points for child Isofix seats, an electric sunroof and upgraded sound systems are among the interior options, while roof rails and metallic paint form part of the exterior goodies. But none of these - save perhaps for the Isofix - will make a huge difference to you now. So if you’re determined to get a Mk1, you’d better just ride your luck and see what extras you end up with.
