Interior

What is it like on the inside?

Overall we like the interior of the 5008, it’s stylish and offers decent quality materials for the money. One quibble would be the extent to which buttons and switches are recognisable across the whole of the Stellantis empire, but it’s not quite the same as the VW Group sharing that sees Volkswagen Polo bits turning up in a Lamborghini or some such.

The 5008 has a digital instrument panel and a 10in touchscreen (a mere 8in effort in the entry level Active car) that sits above air vents and a couple of rows of toggle switches. This is where the car is showing its comparative age – it’s not nearly as good as the setup in the latest 308, for example. When you plug your phone in you end up with a teensy CarPlay display in the middle that wastes the large widescreen format.

Likewise there are things like the niggling irritation that you can’t do a single swipe of the windscreen wipers in the 5008, which is available with a downward stalk pull in the newest cars.

What’s the space like?

Thankfully the design does not impinge on space. The two rearmost seats aren’t really for adults – more so small children up to early teens – but that’s OK. Erecting, stowing and accessing them is straightforward enough, but remember when they’re up and in use, the boot shrinks from massive (a full 952 litres) to tiny (just 166 litres). Tip all the seats down and you’re looking at a cavernous 2,150-litre space.

The middle row gets three individual seats that all slide fore/aft and recline. Slid all the way back and reclined a bit, it’s pretty comfy back there. Top spec GT trim adds two USB charging sockets for rear passengers too.

What about that steering wheel setup?

This is possibly the most divisive part of the 5008. Some of us love it, others hate it. The dials in Peugeot’s distinctive cockpit setup are designed to be read over the top of the (incredibly tiny) steering wheel, not through it.

If you’re of a certain height, the wheel rim blocks the bottom half of the dials, and that’s annoying. Plus, in a car as large as the 5008 it can seem strange using such a small steering wheel.
