Buying

What should I be paying?

Well, it’s not going to be light on fuel, is it? If you ever go beyond the low 20s to the gallon, you’re doing very well indeed. Mind you, the claim is a mere 22.2mpg, so at least you’ll stand a chance of equally the brochure boasts. Mind you, with prices stretching from £74,599 to a whopping £90,845 for the GLC 63 S Coupe Premium Plus (with Burmester hi-fi and a sunroof), you’re hardly likely to complain of high running costs.

You’ll pay £11k or so more for an S model, which you really ought to go for – come on, it’s in the spirit of the car. Spec-wise, kit levels are very generous. You get air suspension, the electronic rear axle differential lock, heated memory seats, 19-inch alloy wheels, ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice activation; self-parking, ambient lighting with a choice of 64 colours, the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and tinted privacy glass.

Going carspotting? Here’s what to look out for on the S: red brake calipers, 20-inch rims, dark silver trim, the bucket seats, and Alcantara on the steering wheel. Ceramic brakes are £4,285 and might help the ride a tad due to lower unsprung weight. And we’d recommend the £1,695 Driving Assistance Package to take the sting out of low-speed city driving, especially when you’ve got to manage such an egg-you-on powertrain.
