Buying
What should I be paying?
The base of the range is the G450d weighing in at £136,690, through the £146,095 G500 and the G580 from £180,860 for the First Edition cars. The G63 is four grand more than that, at the top of the range.
G-Class residuals are as dense as the car itself, so don’t expect too many deals, especially on the first EQ cars. None of this is obviously on the budget end of the spectrum, and not many Gs come without options, so you’re looking at well north of £200k for a well-specced G580/G63. Which is bonkers when you think about it.
One small ray of hope is that if you were to purchase a G580, then it’s pure electric, so benefit-in-kind would be cheap on a business lease. Though ‘cheap’ is relative if you’re genuinely in the market for a brand-new G-Class.
What are the options?
Many options. All of the options. From grille style (we don’t get the ‘electric’ grille on UK G580s initially for some reason), to the squircle rear equipment box on the First Edition G580 (it can hold charging cables or just wet kit, and locks with the car), wheels, interior trims, it’s all for the taking.
There are off road packs, the aforementioned customisation programme, an absolute avalanche of possibilities on the configurator, which is worth a few minutes of daydreaming in itself. And all of those things are busy upping the list price.
There are also all of the colours, from standard through special to paint-to-sample via Mercedes’ aforementioned Manufaktur system. Which, you guessed it, are all costed. You can get a G very expensive with just a few clicks on that configurator.
What spec would you go for?
It really depends what you want your G to be. If it’s an urban tank, then the First Edition G580 with matte paint and a funny-shaped box on the back might well be for you. If you want to scare the neighbours – and possibly yourself – or cause havoc on a trackday, then the G63 is a monster. Especially painted an obnoxious shade of Orange Magno.
But if it were our own money, then a G450d in a sombre colour with the off-road package, small 18-inch wheels, clear glass and a roof rack (which MB also supplies) would be just perfect, thank you. Call us old-school if you want, but we’d have that and pass it down to future generations.
