Lexus GX (US) review

The GX 550 starts with the Premium trim at $64,250 and goes as high as $81,250 for the Luxury+ version, while the Overtrail is priced at $69,250 to $77,250.

Most of the stuff worth having comes in the Luxury trims like the adaptive variable suspension, superior Mark Levinson surround sound system and the panoramic glass roof, for starters. That’s where we’d begin pricing out our daily road-going GX.

Of course, the Overtrail gives the Lexus that extra bit of rugged capability and is a breakout trim for the SUV. It’s not as road-friendly with its wheel setup and suspension settings, but it’s going to be the one better suited for anyone actually driving in the dirt instead of just living with the fantasy. It also chucks the useless third row.

Forced to pick one or the other, we’re split but leaning towards the GX 550 Luxury by a hair. The Overtrail sure looks like a cool dirt-blasting weekend warrior, but we’d get more use out of the more tarmac-friendly Lexus.

Some competitors worth noting would be the BMW X5 which would easily be the better choice for those looking for more street performance. The GX 550’s most glaring opposition would be the Defender 110 as it too is a modernized luxury rock crawler.

We guess that choice might come down to preference and also if you view hunting Defender parts over easily acquired Toyota components when things go awry as a fun way to spend your sacks of extra money.
