Buying
What should I be paying?
The 130 isn’t cheap. Your entry point to the range is the P300 petrol engine (a 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo that makes 296bhp) in the snappily titled X-Dynamic SE trim. That’ll set you back £73,850 at the time of writing, although you’ll only pay that little if you avoid the accessory packs. Like with other Defenders there’s the choice of Explorer Pack (£3,726), Adventure Pack (£1,834), Country Pack (£1,236) and Urban Pack (£1,438).
Let’s get back to base trim levels though, because if we start getting lost in the configurator and all of the Defender’s options, we’ll be here all week. After the X-Dynamic SE comes HSE (£75,575 with the P300 powertrain) and then X-Dynamic HSE (£78,730).
Want more power? The P400 petrol with 395bhp starts at £80,265 and then rises through the trim levels in a similar manner. If you want a diesel then your entry price is £78,860, while the V8 starts at a frankly terrifying £117,475. Just don’t ask about fuel efficiency. Oh go on then – the quoted figures are 19.6mpg and 325g/km of CO2. Good grief.
With all 130s you get a decent amount of kit as standard including LED lights, a Meridian sound system and loads of driver assistance tech. Oh, and thankfully you can turn lots of the latter off using a single button on the steering wheel – just set up your favourite custom settings and switch to that every time you switch the car on. No need to delve into the screen. Result.
