What is it like on the inside?

Oh god, it’s just glorious. The blue trim, the boxy dash, the orange instruments – you obviously don’t have to have it like this, but we absolutely would. But beyond that the ergonomics are superb. The driving position is just perfect. The thin-rimmed Sparco steering wheel is just where you want it, the pedals are perfectly spaced and the seats, despite the square-edged carbon frame and blocks of padding hinting at heavy discomfort, are actually some of the snuggest to sit in that I’ve come across. Do many miles in this car and it certainly won’t be your frame that complains first. It’ll be your ears.

How’s luggage space?

There are some surprisingly spacious door pockets.

Ah, I see. And what’s quality like?

There is also a small locker under the nose, but this is a short sprints kinda car, not a cruiser. Anyway, quality is impressive. There are no trim rattles, the doors close way more solidly than we’re sure they would have done on the original rally car, and the switches and buttons all operate with lovely defined clicks.

It’s all very simple in here: dials for heating controls, a double stacked row of red buttons that see to everything from the foglights to the demisters and some Bentley-style organ stops for the vents. There is a screen low on the console, which supports Bluetooth audio and telephone and shows the rear camera view when you’re reversing. It’s not perfectly placed, but we wouldn’t have it any other way – a screen shouldn’t be prominent in a car like this.

Much more important to celebrate the dials, which this car does. There are loads of them, and watching the needles flick back-and-forth is a constant joy. But we haven’t even got to the best bit yet…

And what’s the best bit of the cabin?

Nothing to do with the cabin. We’re talking about the engine bay. Because boy, oh boy, once you lift that clamshell, will you spend hours poring over every single detail of it. It’s just exquisite, even down to the colours of the components, the gold finish on the cam covers, dampers and rear brace, the red springs, the white powder coated exhaust, the black insectoid carbon airbox. Nothing is hidden, this is the elegance of pure engineering.
