Buying

What should I be paying?

Standard spec is pretty strong on the X4, including automatic gearbox, 4WD, LED headlamps, connected navigation, CarPlay and decent-size wheels. Paint is the usual gotcha: the only colour that isn't £670 extra is ambulance white.

Beyond that there are two grades with extra cosmetics details. M Sport is what you'd expect, a dose of outside-lane aggression, and a stiffer chassis.

On top of that is an M Sport X version, pictured here, with dark grey castellated skirts and more equipment. It too gets the M Sport chassis.

The 20d engine offers 142g/km and 52.3mpg, but don't expect to actually score that as it's measured by the old standard.

Best ownership news is the resale, which is reflected in PCP and leasing rates. The X3 is the lowest-depreciating of all BMWs, and the X4, being scarcer, will be slightly better again.

Warranty is three years over an unlimited mileage.
