What is it like on the inside?

The good news is the BMW badge is backed up by quality, and the fit, finish and general aura of the family-friendly 2-Series is once again distanced from the usual fare of this class. Step from a Zafira into this, and you really will feel like you've stepped up a class.

It’s not as practical as some rivals, though; the Active Tourer houses five people nicely, but it stops short of being the ultimate holdall thanks to a floor that’s not entirely flat with the seats flipped down.

The Gran Tourer is longer and taller, adding an additional two seats that fold up from the boot floor. Beyond a five-minute journey, they’re really for kids only, and the boot won’t swallow much with them in use. But if it’s a posh wagon you want for school run duties, it’s mostly up to task.
