You can now order one of 300 UK-bound Toyota Supras

Three (hundred) is the magic number, apparently. The new Toyota Supra will produce more than 300bhp, from a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six. And just 300 are headed for the UK.

And now, you can officially put your name on the list. A £1,000 deposit – along with your name and number – will get you a place on Toyota’s online reservation list, ahead of the car being officially available to order from the new year.

Once those 300 places have been allocated, interested parties will be put onto a waiting list. And we suspect there might be a few interested parties, especially considering a) how long it’s taken Toyota to release a new Supra, and b) the fact that it promises to be quite a good thing.

“It bobs and weaves a bit more than track-specialised stuff,” we surmised on our first drive of the prototype Supra, “but that’s half the fun, it moves and you move with it, catching little slides, deploying the full travel of the throttle, pinging through the gearbox and enjoying the engine rasping away in front of you.”

The full-spec has yet to be revealed, but as mentioned, we know it’ll produce more than 300bhp from that BMW-sourced 3.0-litre turbo six, it’s matched to a BMW eight-speed auto gearbox and rear-wheel-drive.

We know too, that the new Supra is stiffer than the Lexus LFA – despite zero carbon fibre in the body or chassis – and that the centre of gravity is lower than a GT86’s. The weight – as yet unconfirmed – is nonetheless distributed perfectly, there’s an active diff at the back and it’s been tested at places as extreme as the Nürburgring and the ice lakes of Sweden.

Oh, and it’s been benchmarked against some serious competition. “The Porsche Cayman was the benchmark from the start,” Tetsuya Tada – the Supra (and GT86) chief engineer, told us.
