These Asics trainers are made out of old car airbags

Well, the leftover bits from the airbag manufacturing process – they haven’t been pre-crashed

Published: 20 Jan 2023

Yesterday we brought you the news that NASCAR drivers would be required to wear fire resistant pants and socks from the 2023 season onwards. You can read that story by clicking these blue words, but it’s another piece of clothing that we’re interested in today. And yes, we are still a motoring website, don’t worry…

You see, the move from underwear to footwear comes as sportswear brand Asics has announced that it’ll team up with Japanese company Toyoda Gosei for a new design of trainer.

Said trainer will be a “sustainable sneaker” that’s made using leftover airbag fabric and steering wheel leather offcuts. Interesting.

We’re told that Toyoda Gosei already has a brand called Re-S that it uses to sell things like bags and pencil cases that are made from the airbag remnants, but to our knowledge at least this will be the first time that it’s been transformed into trainers.

Hopefully they’ll offer some extra crash protection if you go skidding into the skirting boards at home…
