Parrot snitches on drunk driver

Published: 20 Jan 2014

If only it was a Norwegian Blue. As that classic Monty Python sketch taught us, the Norwegian Blue is a remarkable bird, easily stunned into a deathly silence and fond of a long, long nap. Sadly, Guillermo Reyes' pet parrot wasn't a Norwegian Blue. It was a snitch.

Reports of quite possibly the world's greatest driving story have reached TopGear.com from deepest Mexico. Here's what happened: driver Reyes was stopped at a routine alcohol checkpoint in Mexico City last week, and pulled out of his car for testing. But at the crucial moment, a little voice inside his car shouted out, "He's drunk! he's drunk!"

It was of course, Reyes' pet parrot performing the Good Deed of the Century. Turns out Reyes was actually quite drunk, failed his sobriety test and thrown in the ‘drunk tank' to sober up.

But, proving no one likes a snitch, Reyes' plucky feathered compadre joined him in the slammer: it was feared the parrot would die if abandoned, so Snitchy spent the night in jail with his owner. A frosty atmosphere, we imagine. "He's threatening to smother me in herbs and roast me! He's threatening to smother me in herbs and roast me!"
