Hang on, is Ferrari working on a racing yacht of some sort?

Ferrari gives us a glimpse of a hydrofoil sailboat and says its sights are ‘fixed on new horizons’

Published: 23 Jan 2024

Ferrari has been whetting our appetite (literally) for something new today by posting pictures of the ocean on its Instagram page. Now, we’re not absolutely sure what it means just yet, but it looks very much like the Italian firm is about to get back into the world of boats.

Ferrari has dabbled with water instead of roads before, of course. In the 1950s Enzo supplied Achille Castoldi with a 4.5-litre V12 from the 375 F1 car. Castoldi fitted said engine to his boat and set a speed record of 150.49mph over a flying kilometre on Lake Iseo in northern Italy.

Then, in the 1990s Riva built 30 examples of the Riva Ferrari 32 speedboat, and the two Italian firms are actually still official partners, but it looks as though this latest project will involve hydrofoils.

You can watch the teaser video below, but essentially there’s one very short glimpse of a hydrofoil sailboat poking out of the water, and the rest revolves around some wince-inducing marketing speak…

“We audaciously redefine the limits of possible. Conquering racetracks and roads all over the Earth,” reads the script.

“Fire speeds up our engines. Wind shapes our designs. Yet both can propel us forward.

“A hunger to set benchmarks and break records. Our sights fixed on new horizons. Taking the race where we never have before.”

We’ll give you a minute to compose yourself, whether that’s to recover from being sick or simply laughing your head off. Still, this could actually be a really rather cool project. We’ll bring you more as we have it…
