Here are three of the most famous motorsport-inspired watches
Racing and watches have been dancing together for decades - here are three of the best match ups
Rolex Daytona - £12,700
Launched in 1963, the Daytona’s name comes from the Florida racing town’s part in Rolex history. Rolex became official timekeeper of the Daytona International Speedway and title sponsor of the 24-hour race, but the link goes back to the Thirties, where Malcolm Campbell wore an early Rolex Oyster in his Daytona Beach speed record attempts. The Daytona remains one of Rolex’s most popular models – the waiting lists are quite something. Automatic movement in 40mm case in a whole range of metals.
Porsche Design Chronograph 1 - £8,985
This watch has a dial inspired by a 911 dash, complete with tachymeter scale for measuring average speed across a set distance. The designer was copying his own homework – Ferdinand Alexander “Butzi” Porsche had penned the Porsche 911 and needed a new challenge. He founded Porsche Design, which went on to design everything from sunglasses to laptops, but the first product in 1972 was the Chronograph 1. Modern all-black numbered edition has an automatic movement in a 40.8mm titanium case.
Omega Speedmaster 57 - £8,900
The ‘Moonwatch’ might seem a strange choice, but prior to becoming the first watch to take a giant leap for mankind, the Speedmaster was introduced in 1957 as a racing chronograph, complete with tachymeter scale. There are lots of models in the modern range that pay tribute to the Apollo missions, but this Speedmaster 57 is dedicated to the pared back, auto inspired Fifties original. With Omega’s manual winding Co-Axial Master Chronometer movement, 40.5mm stainless steel case.
