Four watches that are magnets for counterfeiters

The four timepieces that are often copied: here's the real deal

Watches
  • Rolex Sky-Dweller

    ROLEX SKY-DWELLER

According to a recent study by the luxury dealer Watchfinder, wannabe Rolexes count for over half of all posh fakes. Switzerland’s finest does not take this sincere form of flattery lying down, and offers official certification on preowned as well as new watches. Fake Rolexes range from quartz-powered tat to well made doppelgängers.

If you want to be sure your Rolex is bona fide, head to your nearest authorised dealer and join the queue. The Sky-Dweller has an automatic movement in a 42mm case that comes in a variety of metals, all of them at least partially precious. This new mint-green dial model has a steel and white gold case. It’s also water resistant to 100m.

  • Tag Heuer F1

    TAG HEUER F1

A big selling brand with a lot of wrist cred, TAG Heuer is often targeted by counterfeiters and warns buyers to source from credible dealers. The F1 range starts with quartz-powered models, but for a few hundred more you get this handsome automatic version, with 43mm steel and ceramic case.

TISSOT HERITAGE SMALL SECOND 1938 COSC

The Tissot website has a ‘stop fake’ function that tells you whether online retailers are authorised to sell its products, like this vintage inspired number with automatic movement in a 39mm stainless steel case. The Milanese bracelet has a quick release system for easy swaps with a grey leather strap.

  • Casio F-91W

    CASIO F-91W

If you thought only fancy watches were a target for forgeries, think again. Casio’s digital is a classic piece of late 20th century design that still sells in big enough numbers to keep the counterfeiters interested, despite the tiny profit margin. Alarm and stopwatch function, also splash resistant.
