Want of the day: a Honda NSX-inspired outboard engine

Put this on the back of your dinghy and you’ll be the talk of the marina

Published: 20 Feb 2017

You may know Honda as a maker of cars. From bread-and-butter hatchbacks to 573bhp hybrid supercars, Soichiro Honda’s team have you covered.

But the Japanese firm also makes many, many other things. From hedge trimmers to diddy private jets, and even creepy-cute animatronic robots called Asimo. Honda actually makes so many things it could fill the Argos catalogue itself. For this year’s Miami International Boat Show, it's allowed two of its worlds to collide. The result is this – the Honda NSX-inspired Marine Concept Engine. A mashup of its futuristic supercar and a boat engine. We want it immediately.

Though details are rather thin at the moment, we do know it’s taller than conventional marine engines, sleeker in design (most notably because of that NSX-y floating winged blade) and painted in the same Nouvelle Blue Pearl as Honda’s new supercar. But we don’t know how much power it makes. Which is normally quite an easy game with outboard motors as they’re stamped on the back.

Does that stop us wanting it any less? No. Though if the outboard is anything like the NSX, it’ll take ten years to develop. So get your chequebook ready for 2027.
