Volkswagen is making an all-electric Microbus
Finally! New-age VW Microbus is an autonomous EV with MPV and van versions
“Just make it already.” Our first words when we first saw the Volkswagen I.D. Buzz concept back in January. Well it appears VW listened, because it’s confirmed there’ll be a production version of its latest microbus concept. Not until 2022, mind.
It will be an electric vehicle just like the concept, too. "The vehicle is an important pillar in Volkswagen's electric drive initiative and carries the Microbus driving feeling into the future,” says Dr Herbert Diess, VW board member.
There’ll be a van version, too. VW reckons the car’s Level 3 autonomous driving tech gives it great commercial vehicle potential, as does its packaging: putting the batteries in the floor allows the front and rear axle to be spaced widely apart, handily boosting space for people and things inside. A camper, too? We do hope so.
The production Buzz might even have the same 369bhp as the concept car, though perhaps not as standard. We can certainly expect it to look similar. “The production version will incorporate many design ideas from the concept car,” says VW. “It will also feature variable seating, interactive connectivity and highly automated driving.
It’s just one of 30 (yes, thirty) fully electric models that Volkswagen wants to have on sale by 2025. If anyone’s preparing for forthcoming bans on petrol and diesel, it appears to be VW…
