Volkswagen GX3 News - VW three-wheeler future in doubt - 2006

Published: 04 Jan 2006

Volkswagen has wowed the LA Auto Show with a three-wheeler concept called the GX3.

The GX3 could become a production reality in the US, because it would be classed as a motorcycle and as such would be able to use congestion-busting 'car pool' lanes.

The open cockpit two-seater has been pared to the minimum and uses motorcycle-style instruments.

Weight has been kept to just 570kg - about half that of a Lupo.

Coupled to the low weight and 123bhp, 1.6-litre engine, the GX3 covers 0-62mph in just 5.7 seconds, while still returning 46mpg.

VW says the GX3 could go into production in the near future if there is a positive response from the American public.

If the Yanks don't want it, we'll take it, because VW says the emphasis is very much on handling and driving fun, and the proposed cost is $17,000 (£9,700).
