Vilner pimps the Land Rover Defender

You'll no doubt be aware that the Land Rover Defender - that staple of countless national armed forces, tin-pot militias and Richard Hammond - has been around since 1948. And in the intervening 63-year period, it hasn't, erm, changed much.

It's still as tough as a Winchester 12 gauge and as utilitarian as Bear Grylls hunting for an evening snack in the wilderness. But should it be as luxurious inside as a Range Rover? After all, as Richard and James have posited over the years, a Defender should be ruinously old and biblically dirty to be worthwhile...

Bulgarian tuning firm Vilner decries ‘pish' to this notion. It has customised the interior of two Defenders for an anonymous Russian oligarch, "for whom luxury matters".

The ‘Twins', as they are called, feature some very solid sound-proofing, nappa leather inside, a 600W audio system, a 15in screen with DVD player, ambient lighting and LED lights on the dash.

And, as our Bulgarian man at Vilner tells us, "hunting and fishing maniacs sometimes practice their hobbies during the night at dark. Therefore, the headlights of both Jeeps feature additional lenses and xenons." Quite.

These are just the first two customisations, but Vilner told us each interior cost €12,000 - £10,600 - to make, while the sound system is worth over £4k alone.

"We make individual custom projects," Vilner told TopGear.com, "and we will not make any other cars like these two."
