Video: meet Cuba’s drag racers

Published: 10 Apr 2014

This is a trailer for upcoming documentary Havana Motor Club, which explores Cuba's underground community of car racers, and their quest to host the first legal drag race since the revolution in 1959.

See, the socialist state banned motorsport because it was considered too dangerous and elitist. But a small band of mechanics began hopping up old Chevys using smuggled parts from Miami and the sort of ingenuity notably absent from Top Gear's Technology Centre.

Now, with import laws and trade embargoes slowly loosening, the drivers want to go head-to-head, and are trying to organise the first official car race since Fidel Castro came to power...

Because the film, created by Bent-Jorgen Perlmutt, is a Kickstarter project, there's no official release date yet, but you can donate to the project by clicking on these blue words.
