Used cars

Here are some sub-£2k, pre-Noughties used cars we found this week

Adorable Japanese coupes, handsome European hatchbacks and a tasty restoration project await

Mazda MX-3
  • Audi 80

    Audi 80

We begin with a 16-valve Audi 80 for a fiver under budget. OK, so there’s the odd stain here and crisp crumb there, but its purpose is to just keep going. And since it’s got under 85,000 on the clock, it likely has much going left.

  • Mazda MX-3

    Mazda MX-3

A cutesy two-door, four-seat coupe which often flies under the radar, thanks in no part to the success of that other MX from the Mazda range. Fitted with a 1.6-litre inline-four and four-speed automatic box, the MX-3’s weight bobbles around the 1.1-tonne mark, so it should still put on a good show on the right road.

  • Land Rover Discovery Series 1

And on the complete opposite end of the spectrum is this 3.9-litre V8-powered Series 1 Disco. Aside from the strong off-road performance, it even comes with seven full leather seats, electric windows and, wait for it… a cassette player. A lot of car for not much investment.

  • Peugeot 406 Coupe

    Peugeot 406 Coupe

One of Peugeot’s greatest hits for £1,750. And with barely 62,000 miles showing on the odometer. That is it and that is all.

  • Volvo 480

    Volvo 480

Pop-up headlights, four seats and a sunroof - what more do you need in life? This Volvo 480 is the non-turbocharged version, so it’s unlikely to ever raise pulses. But when something looks as boxy and as retro as this, spirited driving only means you’d miss the wave of thumbs-up from pedestrians. And why would you want to do that?

  • Porsche 924

    Porsche 924

This week’s penultimate choice, and one that’s likely to climb just past budget when the auction concludes this Sunday. It’s also in need of a few quids’ worth of work, namely a bit of welding and panel respraying. But surely a manual 924 is worth bending the rules for.

  • Wildcard: BMW Z3

    BMW Z3

Or, if a vintage Porsche isn’t what you want to spend a few weekends toiling away on, how about this Z3 convertible? Its 2.8-litre six-pot has covered less than 72,000 miles, and these things are only going to appreciate as BMW’s design language (likely) continues to get even funkier. Surely worth a punt at £1,495.
