Here are five classic used cars for less than £30k we found this week

American behemoths, British roadsters and rally conversions all form part of this week’s versatile list

We’ve snuck a couple of rally spec cars into this week’s list, and the first of those is a second-generation Ford Escort whose stretched body hides nothing but a pair of seats, a steering wheel and an engine. It may only have 150bhp, but in combination with a hydraulic clutch and limited-slip differential, this should be nothing short of loose surface nirvana.

  • Mercedes-Benz GE280

Looking for a bona fide Knightsbridge cruiser on a budget? Look no further, because this 1983 G-Wagen has experienced a big overhaul to mimic the external look of one of its modern day brethren. That partially extends to the cabin too, where the retro switchgear sits ahead of reupholstered - and now quilted - seats.

  • Peugeot 205 GTI

    Peugeot 205 GTI

A Peugeot 205 GTI is special enough, but one that looks like it's ready to swallow up the gravel pits and mossy hills of deepest Wales? Perfection. That’s precisely what this is, and even comes equipped with a chromed set of original GTI alloys. As far as plucky conversions go, this is right up there.

  • Hummer H1

If what you really want is to steal the room wherever you go, quite literally, a military-grade Hummer H1 should fit the bill. Powered by a monstrous 6.5-litre diesel V8, the advert states a payload of over two thousand kilograms. Or most humans following Christmas dinner.

  • BMW 535i

OK, let’s pull in one more car that you might seriously consider for a sub-thirty-grand driveway ornament, which in layman’s terms means a classic BMW of sorts. We’ve opted for a E28 535i saloon with all of 218bhp, complete with a central-rear-mounted exhaust and motorsport stripes along the flanks. Lovely.
