Used cars

Here are 10 used six-cylinder cars for under £10k we found this week

Starring: the BMW M3! Alfa 147 GTA! And something called a 'Porsche 911'!

BMW E46 M3
  • Volkswagen Golf R32 (MK5)

    Volkswagen Golf R32 (MK5)

Without doubt a future classic. You can hear it bellowing from a mile away, thanks to its lightly angry 3.2-litre V6. This one’s even more juvenile than usual since it’s got a Miltek exhaust plus a host of other modifications, like a new induction kit and lowering springs. Priced at just £5.5k, it’s a genuine bargain.

  • Alfa Romeo 156 GTA

Unsurprisingly, Alfa’s legendary ‘Busso’ V6 creeps onto our list. With around 250bhp to carry the boxy but handsome 156 GTA ‘Q2’ to a top speed of 155mph, here’s a manual example finished in Grigio Silver. And yes, before you ask, it’s got the Teledial alloys.

  • Porsche 911 Carrera 2 (996)

Anyone for a manual, rear-wheel drive 911 with 300bhp to hand? You’ll need to pull on your haggling hat to try and cut £900 from the list price of this 996, but successfully do so, and you’ve got a proper flat-six convertible sports car. It’ll even nudge past 170mph if an Autobahn run tempts you.

  • Saab 9-3 Aero

    Saab 9-3 Aero

Definitely not one for nailing apexes, because Saab Convertible, but it’s easy to appreciate the level of work that’s gone into this 9-3 Aero. It’s even got BMW-inspired Angel Eye headlights, a louvred bonnet and a bespoke diffuser. There’s lots of red-coloured thingamabobs under the bonnet too. And most importantly, Saab Convertible.

  • BMW M3 (E46)

    BMW M3 (E46)

It was a question of when, and not if, an E46 showed up on our list. It’s impossible to ignore. Still looks good today, to the point where an example like this would probably turn far more heads than a new G80 M3. Straight-six motoring doesn’t get much better. Unless it’s a CSL, in which case it kinda does.

  • Alfa Romeo 147 GTA

    Alfa Romeo 147 GTA

We mention the CSL because it's one of the greatest six-cylinder cars ever made. Want to guess what else made that list? The 147 GTA. This fizz-and-pop hot hatch from the Noughties still looks meaner than any of its modern rivals; from the massive wheel arches and the angry face to the clean Rosso Red paint, it’s a stunner for £9k.

  • Volkswagen Passat R36 (B6)

The R36 is rare. According to How Many Left, just over 100 of the original 150 sold in the UK are still roaming the streets, so it’s a proper ‘if you know, you know’ type car. But beyond receiving the nod of approval from those who know, this example will get you, your family and the pooch to 62mph in under six seconds. Brisk.

  • Jaguar XJ

    Jaguar XJ

Unlike most of the cars featured, this nine-year-old XJ is very sensible. There are no gaping fins atop its bonnet and booster rockets beneath it; you’ll find a tame 3.0-litre diesel six-pot. But peek inside the cabin and you’ll spot lots of cream leather and quilted floors, plus a pair of sunroofs. If you want to be fashionably late in acres of comfort, this is the vehicle for you.

  • Mercedes-Benz SLK350 (R172)

    Mercedes-Benz SLK350 (R172)

Here’s a mediumly-naughty third-gen SLK350 combining the entire stockpile of black paint with a magnificent body kit. There’s some legitimate muscle beneath it all too, with 302bhp and 273lb ft of torque provided by its nat-asp V6.

  • Wildcard: Ford Mustang (S197)

    Ford Mustang (S197)

    Here’s a big, blue, left-hand-drive, fifth-gen Mustang with a 4.0-litre V6 and a soft-top roof. We needn’t say more about why it’s this week’s wildcard.
