Uh oh, Tesla has recalled every single Cybertruck

Bought a Cybertruck? Dodgy glue means there’s a chance your accelerator pedal could become stuck at full throttle…

Published: 22 Apr 2024

Are you one of the 3,878 people that currently has a Tesla Cybertruck parked on the drive? Well, you probably need to pay attention for a second, because Tesla has recalled every single one of the bonkers-looking trucks that it built between 13 November 2023 and 4 April 2024.

The issue is with the accelerator pedal, which can dislodge from its pad if you hit the throttle too hard. The broken section of pedal can then get stuck under a piece of trim and jam the throttle in the ‘very much on’ position. Not great, especially if you’ve gone for the 845bhp ‘Cyberbeast’ tri-motor version.

If this does happen to you, don’t fear – Tesla notes in its recall document that “the brake pedal will cut drive torque, including when both brake and accelerator pedals are pressed, and continued application of the brake pedal will bring the vehicle to a stop as quickly as if the accelerator pedal was not pressed".

You will want to take your car in to have it fixed free of charge asap. Tesla was apparently first made aware of the issue on 31 March this year, with a second customer complaint on 3 April. It then ran tests and concluded that “an unapproved change introduced lubricant (soap) to aid in the component assembly of the pad onto the accelerator pedal. Residual lubricant reduced the retention of the pad to the pedal".

The fix should be fairly simple to secure the two parts together, and we’re told that by 17 April every Cybertruck in production had a new accelerator pedal with a new part number. All cars built before then that are yet to be delivered will have the fix applied before they reach their new owner.
