Photo of the day: Mustang was the world's best selling coupe
The Ford Mustang is the only sports coupe to sell over 100,000 cars last year
That’s right – according to IHS Automotive data, Ford shifted around 140,000 Mustangs in 2015, thus making it the ‘world’s best selling sports coupe’. Ford says the new global ‘Stag, which in GT350R form we named Muscle Car of The Year, was the only sports coupe to sell more than 100,000 units worldwide.
Unsurprisingly, the majority of sales are in the US, where in March, Ford sold almost 12,500 cars. Europeans have bought 16,600 since it went on sale last summer, with 3,500 headed for the UK and 1,000 already delivered here.
One in three Mustangs bought by Germans are convertibles. They buy a bigger proportion of drop-tops than anyone else.
Most are going for the V8, but in China (where the ‘Stag was the best selling sports coupe in the last quarter of 2015) buyers prefer the little 2.3-litre four-cylinder EcoBoost version, whose engine is shared with the Focus RS.
We think this is very good news. So to celebrate, here’s a visual metaphor, in the shape of a Mustang literally smoking out an Audi TT.
