Hurrah! This is a right-hand-drive Mustang Mach 1

Ford’s 473bhp special heads to Australia… and then Britain?

Published: 14 Oct 2020

This is good news. This is Ford’s latest Mustang Mach 1 with the steering wheel on the right-hand side of the car. Which means we might get it – officially – in the UK.

Ford had previously hinted it might be a ‘global’ car, then said no more. It still hasn’t, but it has allowed our friends down under to order 700 of the things. If RHD cars are headed for Australia, surely we'll get some, too?

A quick recap. The Mach 1 sits between the regular V8-powered Mustang GT and the crazed Shelby versions. It gets an uprated 5.0-litre engine, still naturally aspirated and producing 473bhp and 420lb ft, which are fed to the rear wheels via your choice of six-speed manual and ten-speed automatic gearboxes. You know which way you need to go.

Its pumped-up appearance here comes thanks to something called a Handling Pack. Cue the jokes that a regular ‘Stang doesn’t come with any handling as standard. You do want said pack, though; available only if you’ve gone manual (targeting the purists) you get a bigger front splitter and rear wing, a long, low-drag underbelly pan and wider 19in wheels.

Fingers firmly crossed we get to try it out on the bibbly bobbly roads of Britain…
