Hey, Toyota Camry, is that you?
Toyota’s long-serving midsize sedan is definitely due for an update
Toyota dropped a shadowy teaser image this week that clearly shows, um, a car. But what car, exactly, is anyone’s guess. The company doesn’t offer any cheeky hints or details either, simply asking if we can "guess what’s on the horizon" underneath the above photo.
Okay, Toyota, we’ll wager a guess: it’s the new Camry.
The timing is certainly right, seeing as how the current Camry debuted back in 2018. Besides, with the fancy new Honda Accord currently available at dealers, Toyota would be smart to replace its aging competitor with something fresh-faced and modern.
On that note, we can’t see much of the Camry’s fresh face, but the LED lighting signature is certainly reminiscent of the new Prius. We don’t expect Toyota to go too wild with the styling, since this is one of the company’s most popular mass-market cars.
Rumors suggest the Camry will launch with a new hybrid powertrain, possibly borrowing either the 236hp setup that powers the Crown sedan or the 265hp turbo configuration you’ll find in the Highlander. It’s unlikely that Toyota will continue to offer its 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V6 engine, though a base I4 powerplant could come standard on base models. It’d be a big flex for Toyota to go hybrid-only with this one.
When will we see the new Camry? That’s also anyone’s guess. But with the 2023 Los Angeles Auto Show just one month away, we won’t be shocked if this shadowy figure – whatever it might be – shows up there.
