Fisker Karma S concept news - Detroit show: Fisker Karma S concept -

Published: 13 Jan 2009

Not content with unveiling the production version of the Karma in Detroit, Fisker has also taken the covers off the Karma S Concept: a two-door convertible version of the luxury hybrid.

Looks pretty tidy, eh? Especially from that side view, where you don’t get the full force of the Karma’s giant gaping mouth. We reckon there’s a bit of Ferrari California about the rear end (in a good way) and perhaps a touch of Alfa 8C in there too, which is never a bad thing.

Not that we should be surprised that Henrik Fisker can draw up a handsome car: after all, he was the man behind the Aston DB9 and V8 Vantage.

The Karma S shares a platform and drivetrain with its four-door sibling, so it’s powered by a 260 bhp GM-sourced two-litre petrol engine mated to a battery pack and two 200bhp electric motors. It’ll manage 50 miles in all-electric range, and should return around 100 miles per gallon in hybrid mode.

The roof, in case you’re wondering, is a folding hardtop arrangement that folds down into a surprisingly small space, avoiding the big-arsed look of many metal-roofed convertibles.

Fisker says the Karma S could reach production by 2011, but given that it only took them a year to take the fixed-roof Karma from concept to production, we wouldn’t be surprised to see it even sooner.
