Tuned Toyota GT 86s at Tokyo show

  • In this month's issue of Top Gear magazine, we've apportioned a sizeable chunk to Japan's re-emergence; it's new dawn. And one of the chief catalysts is the Toyota GT 86.

Now that it's been properly revealed and all officially official, cast your mind back to how you first saw the finished model; a crude scan from a modifying catalogue.

To those who cooed in approval, Toyota has just revealed a pair of tuned GT 86s bound for this weekend's Tokyo Auto Salon; a two-day modifying exhibition. One is the Modellista version shown above, now official rather than in scanned-from-the-back-of-a-mag guise. Naturally, this is just a cosmetic affair, showcasing what you can do to your Toyota. There are new front, side and rear skirts, as you can see. Also, the wheels are gold. Gold.

  • The other is tuned by TRD Performance (above), and features reworked suspension with new front and rear anti-roll bars, a carbon front strut, rear diffuser, additional cross-bracing and a high-response exhaust.

Elsewhere on the Toyota stand there's a supercharged, 128bhp iQ tuned by GRMN set for a limited production run of 100 units, featuring uprated brakes, sports suspension and a new exhaust. There's also a fan club-built solar-electric version of the 2000GT sports car, along with the TES-ERA EV and others.

Have a click through the photos and see if you reckon the kits make the GT 86 look better, then read our first drive on its sister car, the rather smashing Subaru BRZ.
