This is Thailand’s new Toyota Hilux Champ Super SWB, and we want one
Brilliant name, brilliant little pickup. And it costs the equivalent of £14,000
A couple of years back, Toyota unveiled its simplified and brilliantly named Hilux Champ for the Thai market, although it was called the Hilux Rangga in Indonesia, the Hilux Tamaraw in the Philippines and the Hilux Stout in Peru.
The Champ actually sits on the same ladder frame chassis as the full-size Hilux and uses the same 2.4-litre diesel engine, but it’s only available with supremely boxy styling and as a single-cab pickup or chassis cab.
At first you had the option of short or long wheelbase versions, but Toyota Thailand has now decided to chop even more length out of it to create this supremely cute Hilux Champ Super Short Wheelbase. We love it!
By the looks of the Toyota Thailand website, you can only get the Super SWB in ‘Attractive Package’ form and with an auto gearbox. That means it’s actually more expensive than the non-super Short Wheelbase version, although prices do still only start at the equivalent of £14,100. Bargain.
Reckon this dinky utilitarian hero would be a success on our shores?
