Gallery: behind the scenes in Africa

  • Presumably, you all tuned into part one of our African epic, which involved Hammond, May and Clarkson trying to find the source of the Nile in £1500 estate cars they bought off the internet.

And our triumvirate of bangers - a BMW 5-Series, Subaru Impreza WRX wagon, and a Volvo 850 T5-R - made good truck of demonstrating that exploration's actually quite hard. Especially when pebble-smooth tarmac gives way to oceans of mud. Even more especially when said cars, which aren't really up to the job as standard, have been modded so the presenters can sleep in them....

But they've also proved that it is just - just - possible. So far... Check out our exclusive gallery to remind yourself of the trials and tribulations they faced. And don't forget to tune in to BBC Two or BBC HD on Sunday, 8:00pm for part two.
