Skoda has recreated the 1000 MBX for our modern day world
Czech carmaker reimagines its 1960s coupe using its latest design language. We like
Regular visitors to TopGear.com will know that Skoda has recently been digging into its back catalogue to reimagine classics using its current ‘Modern Solid’ design language – see the 110 R – and the latest car to receive the treatment is the 1000 MBX.
And doesn’t it just look truly excellent? The original 1000 MBX coupe arrived in 1966, derived from the 1000 MB saloon, the Czech carmaker’s first car to get a unibody construction. Power came from a 988cc engine delivering 42bhp, with an uprated 1100 MBX version arriving in 1968, powered by a 1,107cc engine with 52bhp. It remains one of Skoda’s rarest production models ever, with just 2,517 built in total.
Ripe, then, for a 21st Century interpretation. The Modern Solid-styled Skoda 1000 MBX features subtle nods to the original – such as the raised headlamps above the bonnet line, the crease line along the flanks, and the distinctive C-pillar treatment – but is based on a flat floor electric platform to improve cabin flexibility.
Up front there’s a glass dashboard onto which images, such as the original instrument panel, are projected, and it goes without a central console – like the car it was based on. Well ahead of its time there. In the back there are individual cinema-style tip up seats, offering extra room for luggage space when required. The design also features rear-hinged doors and air suspension.
“Our concept is sportier overall, yet, still has a friendly look. Modern sports cars often appear overly aggressive, while those from the ‘60s and ‘70s carried a certain elegance, even endearing charm – and that’s what I wanted to preserve,” said Antti Savio, who put pen to paper to come up with the initial design.
“Our MBX concept is a 2+2 coupé that can easily transform into a two-seater with remarkable cargo capacity,” added David Stingl, responsible for the cabin magic. “It’s not meant to be just a fun weekend coupé to be a second car in the family, but a vehicle with exceptional everyday usability.”
And all this in just three to four weeks we’re told. Impressive.
