The Top Gear team’s highlights of 2011

  • "Every so often Top Gear attempts something that could be utter genius or utter failure and we never know which way it'll go until we try it on camera. This, I like to think, turned out to be the first option. Apart from the bit where the railway magazine editor got covered in flies and poo."

  • "Whilst I share Jeremy's dislike of ‘Tenting', waking up in the middle of the Himalayas during the filming of the Indian special as the sun rose over the mountain peaks will be a difficult memory to top for quite some time"

  • "My favourite TG moment of the year? Top Gear Live at Kyalami, South Africa, and an hour before Jeremy, Richard and James take to our open-air arena. The heavens open. The arena is flooded and as 5,000 sodden fans queue for the final performance of the day the show is certain to be cancelled.

That's when Top Gear's Executive Producer Andy Wilman, a man more used to being behind the camera or locked in an edit suite decides to take matters into his own hands. Armed with 20 garden brooms he organizes a working party that clear the bulk of the ankle-deep water, allowing the show to go ahead. Seeing the boss soaked through having whipped up a bit of Dunkirk spirit was a good moment..."

  • "The Porsche 911 by Singer. I waited so long to drive this car and it was worth it. The right mix of useable power and ultra-low-key cool. Now I just need to rob a couple of banks. Oh, that and driving a Koenigsegg Agera R across Sweden and a frozen lake. Oh, and the Ferrari 458 Spider and the 6ft 3-inch blonde Roman model. I'll shut up now."

  • "Chasing a flame-belching, wheel-spinning Ferrari F40 across the Duke's Pass in Scotland. Its driver was one Dario Franchitti. And I was in a 458 Italia. Which helps."

  • "Driving across a completely empty, sunny Galloway forest in the Merc SLS Roadster, chasing an Aston Virage Volante and Bentley Conti GTC. I got hit in the face by a stone. I didn't care. Ollie Marriage was a bit slow, but apart from that, a perfect day."

  • "Driving a Veyron Supersports up the Stelvio, and a Boss Mustang back down in a thunderstorm with rock falls. I was drip-fed sphincter relaxant for the next four days."

  • "Driving the McLaren MP4-12C all the way from the Top Gear office in London to Italy's Stelvio Pass for our magazine's Performance Car of the Year test. Despite some fairly forgivable electrical gremlins in an early car, it was the most fun 1000 miles of my entire life. And once we arrived in the mountains, I took charge of the Ariel Atom Mugen..."

  • "Being driven quite quickly around Mercedes-Benz's handling circuit by Nico Rosberg in an E63 AMG. His expert use of the Merc's 520bhp and voluminous torques showed little regard to my digestive tract. And he wasn't even trying."

  • "Arguing with the Gendarme about the exact cost of my speeding ticket on the way down to 24 Heures de Mans. There's a quiet joy to disagreeing with the French."

  • "Getting shipped out to Rally Spain to try out the Marjorie Dawes diet and learn the art of WRC rally photography on the side. Nearly bit the dust when trying to get a bit too close to the action... but having Ralliart perforated into my forehead has been on my Christmas list for years. I think the photos came out alright, too."
