Video: meet the man behind Top Gear’s Moon landing

The secret’s out - we faked our moon landing. Here’s how we did it

Published: 15 Sep 2019

Before the conspiracy theorists start bashing our doors down, let’s get one thing straight - we definitely faked our Moon landing. Total hoax. Never happened. Top Gear can magic up many things, but parking a new Land Rover Defender on our lunar neighbour for a cover shoot is – for now – beyond us.

Yep, our Moon landing was actually shot in a studio in Mexico. Plus, rather than a rocket and a fully-fledged space agency, all we needed was a 1:16 scale model of the new Defender and a very clever man named Felix Hernandez.

You can catch a glimpse of how Felix put the image together by watching the video above. But, as is often the case, it wasn’t quite as simple as it may seem. You see – this being shot over a month before the car’s official reveal – it was probably the most heavily-guarded secret in the car world.

That meant negotiating Mexican customs while handcuffed to a mysterious black case with top-secret cargo. Not easy.

For the full story of how we did it, and the full low-down on the new Defender, pick up a copy of the latest issue of Top Gear magazine.
