Sub Zero: it’s April’s Top Gear magazine
In the April issue of TopGear magazine, we commandeer a frozen lake in Sweden with 12 of the finest all-wheel-drive performance cars on sale today.
In the warm of the TG office, this seemed like a fine idea. On reflection, giving £1.1m worth of metal to our editorial team to test to the limits on an almost friction-free on might not have been quite so clever.
Get the TopGear magazine ‘Sub Zero' special to find out what happened on our icy super-test. Available in supermarkets and newsagents, or download the digital edition now.
Our slippery adventure kicks off with an epic 1500-mile drive from London to northern Sweden inthe BMW i8, a sports hybrid with a 23-mile electric range and a 1.5-litre engine. Fair to say this required some careful planning. And woolly hats.
At our private ice lake, the i8 encountered the very cream of 2015's all-wheel drive superstars, from the Lambo Huracan and Bentley GT3-R to Jaguar's F-Type, the Porsche 911 Turbo and, of course, Godzilla: the Nissan GT-R. On spikes. Oh, and our homebuilt rally car and the BAC Mono, for reasons that made sense in the pub-based planning phase.
At which point things became, to put it mildly, rather slippery. As in can't-physically-stand-up slippery. Only one thing to do in such a situation: unleash the Stig.
But there's far more to the April issue than ice and gratuitous sideways. This month's News takes an in-depth look at 2015's biggest unveils, from Aston Martin's all-electric DBX to the new Honda Civic Type-R, Porsche's 911 GT3 RS and the new Audi R8.
We also get up close with Bentley's glorious two-seater concept, the Speed 6, and meet the man who drives the (somewhat terrifying) 500bhp Mercedes AMG GT3 racer.
You'll also find reviews on all the new cars that matter, including the Porsche Cayman GT4, Seat Leon ST, Land Rover Discovery Sport and the BMW X3.
The April issue of TopGear magazine is available now.
