#TopGearChallenge Four: Journalism

So you want to be a car journalist? Now’s your chance

Published: 12 May 2020

We’ve seen your engineering, we’ve showcased your photography, and we’re currently whittling down the best future car designers, but do you have what it takes to be the next Chris Harris? Well, now’s your chance to put pen to paper and show us what you’ve got. Oh, and if you don’t know about #TopGearChallenge yet, click these blue words to get up to speed, then have a go at our latest challenge below.

Your #TopGearChallenge this week is to write 500 words on your greatest car story. It doesn’t matter what the story is about (it can be a memory, journey or even a love letter to your favourite car), we just want your best. Our writers are looking for accuracy, colour, enthusiasm and immersive, descriptive writing. Use your words to take us on an adventure, put us in the car with you, provide us with some escapism and adventure. If you make us laugh, even better. But please, please, please don’t write any more than 500 words. Not only do we have short attention spans, but being a Top Gear journalist also requires hitting a tight word count.

Entries will be divided into four categories depending on what stage of education you’re in: pre-GSCE (0-12 year olds), GCSE (13-16 year olds), A-Level (16-18 year olds), University and beyond (19-110 year olds). The #TopGearChallenge is also open to our global audience, but we don’t understand the international Baccalaureate system, so please tell us which category you’re entering when you submit your entries.

The deadline for entries is midnight (GMT) on Monday 18 May and will be reviewed by the editorial team, and we’ll publish the best submissions. What are you waiting for? Crack your fingers and get typing. Good luck!

How to send us your stuff. Read this bit, it’s really important…

Via email: As this is all about words, the best way to send them to us is via email. So please send your article to: editor@bbctopgearmagazine.com and make sure you title it #TopGearChallengeFour. Please note all entries must be pasted into the email text or attached as a Word file under 15mb in size. Anything over this makes our inbox explode. No, really. And remember to tell us which category you’re entering when you submit your entries. And don’t forget to sign up to Top Gear’s regular newsletter, too.

If you’re under 16 then your parent or guardian must submit your content for you.

Terms and Conditions: read these too, they’re also important...

The Top Gear Department of Education isn’t an official qualification so don’t try and use it to get into university or get a job. The Top Gear Challenges are designed to let you showcase your talent and by playing along you agree that any content you send us may be published and may be edited.

Submissions we publish will be selected by members of the Top Gear editorial team and some of the most notable people in the automotive industry. They will be selected on their levels of ingenuity, creativity and how well they answer the brief.
