#TopGearChallenge Five: Filmmaking

Want a career making car films? This could be your start

Published: 19 May 2020

We’ve got a fresh #TopGearChallenge for you, and this one is for all you budding filmmakers out there. If you’ve ever wanted to make your own Top Gear TV film or Chris Harris Drives, now is your chance. Oh, and if you don’t know about #TopGearChallenge yet, click these blue words to get up to speed, then have a go at our latest challenge below.

Your #TopGearChallenge this week is to shoot and edit your own car film. The title of the film is “The Chase” and your task is to use some toy cars and your house as an indoor racetrack in order to film a lap that’d you’d like to see on TGTV. It doesn’t matter if it’s filmed on a phone or a potato, just please don’t crash! (TGDoE takes no responsibility for damage caused to you or your property in the construction and filming of this challenge). All films need to be edited to a maximum length of 60 seconds and sent into us via link to a YouTube or Vimeo channel, or via Instagram.

Entries will be divided into four categories depending on what stage of education you’re in: pre-GSCE (0-12 year olds), GCSE (13-16 year olds), A-Level (16-18 year olds), University and beyond (19-110 year olds). The #TopGearChallenge is also open to our global audience, but we don’t understand the international Baccalaureate system, so please tell us which category you’re entering when you submit your entries.

The deadline for entries is midnight (GMT) on Monday 15 June and will be reviewed by Alex Renton, Executive Producer, Top Gear TV before we publish the best submissions on TopGear.com. So if you’ve wanted to be a Top Gear director in the future, now is your chance to get out your clapper board and show us what you’ve got.

How to send us your stuff. Read this bit, it’s really important…

Via Instagram: Post your film on Instagram and make sure you include the hashtag #TopGearChallengeFive - that’s how we can see it. We can only see submissions from ‘public’ profiles, so if you’d rather remain a private Instagram user you’ll need to email us your submission instead. And make sure you follow @topgear on Instagram, otherwise we can’t get back to you!

Via email: As film files can be heavy, it may be best to upload your final film to a site like YouTube or Vimeo and then simply email us a link to: editor@bbctopgearmagazine.com and make sure you title it #TopGearChallengeFive. If you do want to send us a file, it must be under 15mb in size. Anything over this makes our inbox explode. No, really. And remember to tell us which category you’re entering when you submit your entries. And don’t forget to sign up to Top Gear’s regular newsletter, too.

If you’re under 16 then your parent or guardian must submit your content for you.

Terms and Conditions: read these too, they’re also important…

The Top Gear Department of Education isn’t an official qualification so don’t try and use it to get into university or get a job. The Top Gear Challenges are designed to let you showcase your talent and by playing along you agree that any content you send us may be published and may be edited.
