Behold this wondrous box of a Mitsubishi kei car

This is the Mitsubishi Super Height K-Wagon. By Japanese standards its name is incredibly prosaic; this is the country that gave us the Pantry Boy Supreme, don’t forget.

The rest of it is wonderfully, blissfully Japanese, however. It’s a kei car, for starters, which means titchy dimensions and an even titchier 660cc engine, while it’s as oblongoid as a traditional British phone box. All the better for eking out every last drop of practicality from its tiny footprint, then.

Mitsubishi’s squeezed in every bit of tech that’ll fit – some self-driving and active safety systems, essentially – while the interior is described as ‘premium’ with “brown as a main theme”. You can’t deny it looks roomy for those in the back.

Plenty of kei cars favour a bit of driving vigour – several of them in this gallery – and the Super Height evidently isn’t one of them. But that doesn’t mean we don’t love it dearly. Like we do all kei cars, simply one of the most inventive sectors of the car market anyway. Even with a sensible name applied.
