If you're anything like us, you'll no doubt spend hours of your day avoiding meetings and making oversteery hand gestures in the office while shouting out poweeerrr. Occasionally, you'll transfer this enthusiasm into looking at very fast, quite old, used cars for sale.

So while we were busy applying liberal amounts of imaginary opposite lock, we decided to hunt down old Audi RS4 Avants. Why? Because the new one has landed.

Revealed earlier this week after a three-year hiatus - in which space Audi gave us the RS3 Sportback and RS5 über coupe - its like a super-middleweight boxer in a very well-fitted suit, if you're fond of anthropomorphised cars. And lets be honest, Audi has kind of nailed this veiled, understated menace (except of course, the new 249bhp A1 Quattro, the feisty little bugger).

It is the latest heir to the throne of very fast, very four-wheel-drive and very understated Audis, dating back to the original Audi-Porsche collaboration that is the RS2. 

Because that RS2 and it's five-pot 20-valver was so good, Audi decided to roll out the first ever RS4 estate in 2000: a 2.7-litre, twin-turbo V6 monster packing 375bhp and 324lb ft of torque. As per the RS tradition, the first RS4 came fitted with permanent quattro four-wheel-drive, with an automatically locking Torsen centre differential and an electronic diff lock with "manipulation of brakes at all driven wheels".

It also came with a six-speed manual for gearbox enthusiasts - you know the type - and Audi reckoned on a 0-62mph time of 4.9 seconds and a limited top speed of 155mph. Figures not too far off the new one, actually.

And thus, you probably want one. So here's a few we found on Auto Trader. This one's done 68,000 miles, has a full Audi service history and costs just under £14k.

This one's had an MTM upgrade to 458bhp - together with a brake upgrade (a sensible move) - and has covered just 40,000 miles. Probably in terror. It's red, and comes in at just under £16k.

And if you want to rock a proper old school Audi, there's this high-miler RS2: 115,000 on the clock, big brake upgrade, full service history and a price tag of under £14k.
