This is it people, the moment you’ve all been waiting for… the TG24 edition of Top Gear magazine is on sale now. You can get a copy delivered straight to your door by clicking the link at the bottom of this article, but first, here’s a little synopsis of what to expect…
We usually call this test Performance Car of the Year – PCOTY for short – or on other occasions it’s been known as Speed Week. It’s essentially a gathering of the ultimate driver’s cars of the past 12 months, and this year we’ve gone big.
You’ll know the grid by now. You’ve seen the drag races, the walkaround videos and the image galleries. But what actually happened when we sorted all 15 cars into testing groups and set the countdown clock to 24 hours?
We’ll have a podium, of course, but the goal is to crown an outright winner – no matter how many arguments may take place. It might not necessarily be the fastest car around Portimao that takes it, but it’ll be the one that puts the biggest smile on the most faces.
To help form our opinions, we pit the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante against the McLaren 720S Spider, and the Mercedes-AMG A45 S against the Tesla Model 3 Performance. Meanwhile, the Ariel Atom 4 went giant hunting as it ran alongside the Mercedes-AMG GT R Pro, the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4, the Jaguar XE Project 8 and the Toyota Supra.
There’s also the full Chris Harris verdict as he gets behind the wheel of the bonkers Volkswagen ID.R and the ultra-exclusive Porsche 935. Plus, the A45 returns as it battles the Ford Focus ST and the Renault Megane RS Trophy-R. Oh, and Ollie Marriage desperately wants you to hear all about the Hyundai i20 WRC car he drove on Portimao’s gravel stage as the sun rose on TG24’s second day. We think he might have enjoyed himself.
And that’s not all. The November issue of TG mag also features our first drive of the all-electric Porsche Taycan, as well as the full verdict on the BMW M8 and the McLaren GT. Plus, if you fancy some more real-world content, our hatchback group test pits the new Vauxhall Astra against the Ford Focus and Mazda 3, and we bring you the full news of Ferrari’s two brand-new convertibles. Well, it’s real-world for a lucky few, while the rest of dream.
