The Genesis GV80 Coupe Concept previews yet another coupe SUV thing
Genesis is going to chop the roof of its GV80 SUV, so here’s a sporty preview dressed as a concept car
This is the Genesis GV80 Coupe Concept, and although it has a carbon fibre roof and four carbon bucket seats inside, it mostly previews a new production car that’ll be unveiled at some point later this year.
Don’t expect the carbon bits to make it past the concept phase, but Genesis’ Chief Creative Officer Luc Donckerwolke does say that the GV80 Coupe “emphasizes the duality of the Genesis brand by showcasing the antagonistic character that lives within the Athletic and Elegance parameters of Genesis’ design philosophy.” Riiiight.
Anyway, we’re told that the Coupe Concept is inspired by the X Speedium Coupe Concept that was unveiled in 2022. Now, we’d much rather that thing come to life as a proper production car, but we can actually see some design similarities in the ducktail-like rear of the GV80 Coupe.
Elsewhere, the SUV concept gets ‘Magma’ paint with a black suede interior that’s livened up by some orange details, as well as fancy quad lights surrounding its monster grille. Expect the production car to have five seats rather than four though, and we can’t imagine that strut brace will be standard fit on a family SUV.
Still, apparently there will be some sportiness built into the Coupe Concept, not least because it’s based on a rear-wheel drive platform. There’s no word on the engine that sits under that large bonnet, but we’d be surprised if the production car didn’t come with the same 2.5-litre petrol and 3.0-litre diesel options as the standard GV80 SUV.
So, do we reckon Genesis can pull off the coupe SUV niche? Thoughts in the comments below, please…
