Video: Veyron SS hits 246mph on road

Published: 31 Jul 2014

The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport can officially hit 267mph. Or in fact, 267.91mph, which is did a few years back at Volkswagen's Ehra-Lessien proving ground. That's really, really, indecently quick.

So this latest video seems a bit...pedestrian by comparison. It's footage of a one-of-one Veyron Super Sport ‘Pur Blanc' hitting ‘just' 246mph on a closed road at the Sun Valley Road Rally.

While it set a new course record at the Rally, it's not even as quick as TG's own Captain Slow, who (briefly) held a record when he blasted to 253mph in a Veyron way back in Series 9.

Still, it's proof that the Veyron will continue to boggle the senses. And let's not forget, 246mph from a 1200bhp, 8.0-litre, 16-cylinder quad-turbo engine with technology pinched from a nearby galaxy is still impressive to watch. It also sounds like a bloody jet engine too.

What's next for the Bugatti story then? Only Bugatti knows, but as we told you last week, we'll see the next chapter in 2016. And it will be incredible.

In this month's issue of Top Gear magazine, we took a Bugatti Veyron across Route 66 - read the online diary below
