As Porsche readies an almost all-turbo 911 range, we look at the bewinged brute that started it all
A refreshed Porsche 911 range is on its way, and as we’ve reported previously, all but the most focused GT variants will come with turbocharged engines.
This is big news on Planet Porsche: up until now, turbocharging has only been used on the highest performance 911s sitting in the upper echelons of the range. And what you see here is the very first of those.
‘Iconic’ is word hastily and often lazily used in the car world, but here we feel it’s entirely justified. There are few side profiles as instantly recognisable as the one above, the large spoiler sitting atop the lid of a 260bhp 3-litre flat-six engine.
Modest in today’s terms, of course, but back in the mid 1970s, the original 911 Turbo’s performance was anything but…
