The McLaren 570GT: now with dragons
'Cabbeen Collection' is a limited-run of 562bhp supercars inspired by Chinese fashion
Today’s nugget of solid gold Top Gear buying advice comes via McLaren. It’s this: now’s the time to buy a 570GT if you’ve been holding off on the 562bhp V8 supercar for its conspicuous lack of dragons.
See? Dragons. Gold, hand-painted dragons on the dihedral doors, and Chao Embroidery gold dragon motifs inside. Meet the first McLaren 570GT MSO Cabbeen Collection.
This is the first of five cars designed in collaboration with Chinese fashion entrepreneur Mr Cabbeen. It’s off to the Beijing Motor Show this week, complete with its ‘Bespoke Gloss Speedline Gold’ 15-spoke wheels and brake calipers.
It’s a subtle spec – very little in the way of visible carbon, an overwhelmingly black theme, and maximum emphasis inside on those intricate stitched artworks. Each one was hand-created by Kang Huifang, the Director of the Professional Embroidery Committee of China's Arts and Crafts Institute. She’s been preserving the heritage of traditional Chao Embroidery for four decades and counting. Bet one of her creations has never accelerated this quickly before.
Any other ideas for traditional artwork on supercars we ought to be making a mint on? Perhaps a Lamborghini covered in Rembrandts, or Tracey Emin’s unmade bed on top of a Ferrari?
