Hurrah! It’s another MSO liveried McLaren

This 720S Spider took a team of people over 260 hours to paint

Published: 07 Mar 2019

Each time McLaren releases a new car, the lads and lasses at MSO – McLaren’s Special Operations division – get hold of one and give it a specially designed livery to show what they can do. Think of it as an advert for their bespoke services.

This then, is their attempt at the 720S Spider, and it reportedly took the team over 260 hours to complete the paintjob.

While it may look pretty restrained, the accents are supposed to highlight the advanced aerodynamics of the Spider and are a tri-tone mix of Cerulean Blue, Burton Blue and Abyss Black paints on top of a Meteorite Grey base colour.

Will manufacturers ever run out of names for paint?

On the inside there’s plenty of MSO badging (including on the accelerator pedal) to remind yourself that you’re just that little bit better than standard McLaren buyers. Pah! What riff-raff.

You’ll also get black leather seats with blue Alcantara trim to match the outside – although the options with MSO seem to be almost endless.

Mechanically the Special Ops Spider is exactly the same as it was when it came out of the factory in Woking. That means a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 710bhp and 568lb ft of torque – enough to put the breeze in your expensively coiffed hair and fire the car to a 202mph top speed with the roof down.
