6,500 people apply to buy 2017 Ford GT

Ford receives thousands of applications to buy 600bhp+ supercar, as first round of applications closes

Published: 13 May 2016

Ford has revealed it has received a total of 6,506 applications to buy one of the first 500 2017 GTs, after the initial (there’s still hope!) month-long application process closed last night. Theoretically, it could have sold each car more than 13 times over, so unless you owned an old one and/or are Jay Leno, the odds of you being allowed to buy one are pretty terrible.

Ford is only planning to build 250 a year, too, so to satisfy everyone who’s submitted an application, it would have to stop taking orders immediately and commit to producing the GT for some 26 years. This will not happen. And depending on how well it does at next month’s Le Mans 24Hrs , demand may yet go up… Hundreds of applicants submitted videos along with their applications, says Ford, and it will start notifying successful applicants in the next 90 days.

And this may well be a £400k+ car, don’t forget. There are more than 6,500 people across 19 countries willing to spend such an amount on something with a Blue Oval on the front.

Meanwhile, to date some 200,000 people have configured their ideal GT on Ford’s configurator. Have a few minutes to spare? It’s well worth a look.
