Lexus' LF-A racer news - Wow, it’s the Lexus LF-A - 2009

Published: 21 May 2009

VW’s stunning Scirocco R isn’t the only interesting thing on show at the Nurburgring this weekend. Lexus has announced that a pair of LF-A racers will compete in the 24-hour endurance race. A pair of 500bhp, V10-powered, track-prepped supercars.

This is exciting news. The LF-A project – Lexus' front-engined supercar which has been 'in development' since we first saw the concept back in 2005 – has gone worryingly quiet recently. Does this mean we’re going to finally see it go into production?

Erm, no. Lexus is staying stonily silent about building a road-going LF-A. Indeed, it even competed an LF-A racer in the Nurburgring 24 Hour race last year – the car qualifed 27th of 223 entrants but finished 121st overall, though seventh in its class – and that didn't do much to bring the 200mph supercar any closer to production.

Enough of the concept racers, Lexus. Enough of the concept convertibles. Please, please, build the LF-A. A real one. For the road. We know there’s a bit of a financial downturn/global economic collapse/impending Armageddon going around at the moment.

But we’re sure we could you find enough punters keen to buy a sleek, 599-rivalling supercar. They’ll probably comment below if you’re really lucky. And we can vouch for their trustworthiness.

So build the real thing? Please? Oh, and best of luck for the weekend. Watch out for those gas-powered Scirocco racers. Silent but deadly, we’ve heard…
