Bugatti Veyron on Route 66: the final day

And so to the end of the road: Los Angeles’ Santa Monica Boulevard, on the very edge of the Pacific Ocean. After seven days, precisely 2,404 miles and very nearly 900 litres of unleaded, our big Veyron road trip has reached the finish line.

And what a trip: the biggest ever undertaken in a Veyron, and, we hope, a worthy way to send the fastest car in the world – not to mention the greatest of the last 20 years – out with a bang, before Bugatti closes the Veyron chapter of its history to embark on something new and possibly even faster.

Los Angeles was, after so many miles of empty desert and wild mountains, a fearsome shock to the system: so many cars, so many junctions, so very many hotpants. The Veyron didn’t care, soldiering on as it had since the very start. Could any other hypercar – hell, any other fast car – manage such a trip so entirely effortlessly?

Not long to go now. At v-max, the Veyron could cover 66 miles in 15 minutes. Unfortunately significant imprisonment would happen long before.

If your intake of neon-clad motel signs is dipping to dangerously low levels, Top Gear prescribes a quick blast along 66. You’ll get enough retro-signage to last you a lifetime.

Into Los Angeles on the vast, busy, tangling freeways. After thousands of miles of emptiness, all the traffic and bustle felt faintly discombobulating.
